She does what the tough men can't do

AMRAVATI: Shobha Tipnis, a 44-year-old Amravati

woman, has catapulted herself to fame because of her unusual lung power. No she does not scream, yell or shriek in high

decibels.

She does what the toughest men cannot do. She bursts 12 mm thick rubber hot water bags like a balloon

in a matter of minutes.

She is now being invited to participate at the 'Impossibility Challenger', a world

record competition which is being held in Dachau near Munich on March 29-30.

Her unusual feat has made her the

only woman in the world to be able to burst hot water bags. She was invited in Germany where she demonstrated her prowess to

a audience who were spellbound as she burst the bag with a deafening sound.

Tipnis says she has till now burst

250 hot water bags. But what made her take up this unusual activity?
"I wanted to do something different

offbeat.

About 12 years ago I happened to see a demonstration in Amravati where a man burst a hot water bag. I

felt if a man could do it why can't I? This made me practice to toughen my lungs," she said.

How tough it is to

burst a hot water bag can be gauged by the fact that it will need 1,000 pounds of pressure to make the hot water bag

burst.

Considering the fact that human lungs are so thin, how does she manage to do it? Practice, she says

smiling. "I practice pranayam daily to strengthen my lungs," she added.

In 1999, Tipnis got her name registered

in the Limca Book of World Record when she burst a hot water bag in 4 minutes and 18 seconds.

Bursting the hot

water bag with mouth is not only difficult but also dangerous. In case the air in the bag gets into the lungs or intestine

through the mouth, then it can burst the organs which are much weaker than the rubber, she said.

To prevent any

injury to the eye during the performance, Tipnis wears protective goggles.

On participating in 'Impossibility

Challenger', in Dachao near Munich in the end of this month, she said, "I am looking for some sponsors as I am expected to

bear my own expenses," she said adding the only problem in India is that very few people have given her the encouragement she

deserves.
