Rs 3.50 cr forensic lab at Amravati

NAGPUR: The state government has sanctioned a fund of

Rs 3.50 crore for setting up a forensic laboratory in Amravati. This will be the first ever forensic laboratory in entire

Amravati division. Sources said that the laboratory would start functioning soon.
 
There is no forensic

laboratory in the districts of Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Washim and Buldhana. As a result the people here have to depend on

forensic laboratories in Nagpur. There are total 39,000 cases for the year 2005 and 2006 and 33,000 cases for 2006 and 2007,

waiting for the results from forensic lab.
 
Due to this police enquiry in many cases cannot be completed as those

still await results from forensic laboratory in Nagpur.
 
The state government has now decided to start a

laboratory at Amravati. "The place, where the lab will be developed is yet to be decided. The funds sanctioned will be used

to purchase equipment and furniture needed for the laboratory. In all 56 persons will be recruited in the laboratory, once it

starts functioning.
 
Investigating general and wildlife crime cases would get a big boost in the region with the

state government deciding to set up a forensic science laboratory in Amravati from April 1.
 
Amravati would be

the fifth revenue division after Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Nashik to have such a lab. During the state budget presentation

in Mumbai on Wednesday, state finance minister Jayant Patil earmarked Rs 3.50 crore for setting up the

lab.
