Crackdown on rash bikers

NAGPUR: Setting a trap from 5.30 am on Sunday, the city traffic

police nabbed 12 bikers near Futala Talao at around 9 am for driving rashly and endangering others on the road. This group of

motorcycle 'enthusiasts' had made it a habit of showing off their dangerous motorcycling skills, and sometimes indulging in

eve-teasing on this stretch favoured by morning walkers.

The traffic police initiated the action against the

bikers after several complaints about their hooliganism, especially on holidays and Sundays, when many throng the pleasant

lakefront. Regular morning walkers had pointed out the nuisance created by the bikers with their antics and zooming

vehicles.

On Sunday morning, the trap was set in place early, and succeeded in netting some of the pranksters

around 9 am, but not before the cops were led on a hot chase by some of the bikers. Senior inspector Jamil Ahmed of traffic

west said that these bikers were also known to be involved in eve-teasing. "Apart from violating traffic rules and orders,

the bikers teased women walkers and girls and then sped away," he said.

The Traffic West's special team of 15

personnel detained around 10 two-wheelers, one four-wheeler and imposed fines of over Rs 8,000 for speeding, rash driving and

other offences on Sunday morning.

"We also informed the parents of the offenders, and told them the reason for

taking action against their children," said Ahmed.
